Always be prepared, even if it never happens.

Did you know:

  • It can get cold even on a summer's evening. In some deserts, it can go below the freezing point of water at night!
  • Feeling cold can be a sign you are tired and need a rest.
  • You can also feel cold if you get sunburn after a day in the sun, because more of your blood goes to your skin to fix the burns, making the centre of your body colder.
  • You can manage your temperature by wearing lots of thin layers, and taking a layer off, or putting a layer on, according to how you are feeling.

Question 05 : Something to find your way. ↑

Question

How do you know where to go?

Answer

Any of:

GPS ON YOUR PHONE; COMPASS AND MAP; SEXTANT AND MAP; SUN, WATCH AND MAP; VISBLE GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES; YOUR LAST KNOWN POSITION

IF LOST, STOP WALKING, DON'T PANIC, SIT DOWN, BREATH DEEPLY, WAIT FOR YOUR ANXIETY TO PASS, AND SEE WHAT YOU HAVE AND KNOW

It is always essential to have a map.

Setting off without a map means you do not know where you are.

A compass is the most reliable item.

We prefer a compass and paper map, as they are reliable and can be used any time.

A compass uses the natural magnetic field of the Earth.

GPS on your phone.

The map and GPS (Global Positioning System) on your phone may be the most accurate; but may fail if your battery runs out or your phone cannot find a satellite signal.

A sextant.

You can also use stars to find out how far North or South you are, using something called a Sextant, but obviously it is only useful during the night.

You measure how high the star is in the sky, which tells you how far North or South you are.

The sun.

You can use the sun (if you know the time of day), as it rises in the East and sets in the West, but obviously it is only useful during the day!

Julian once got lost in an Australian forest, and the map was useless as all he could see were trees.

However, it was the afternoon, so he knew the Sun was in the West; so, by following the Sun westwards he knew he would find a road eventually according to his map.

Big Features.

As a last straw, you might roughly work out where you are by looking for big features around you.

Once when lost on a high moor, Julian used Sheffield and Manchester to find his way (Julian seems to get lost a lot).

"Triangulation" is an advanced form of this.

Question 06 : Something to protect you from the rain. ↑

Question

Something you might need if the weather is:

Answer

WATER PROOF JACKET, UMBRELLA

Not me; unless it is windy of course.

Question 07 : Something to protect you from the sun. ↑

If the weather forecast is sunny, then you need to avoid this…

Answer

Any of:-

SUNCREAM; A SUN HAT

Sun Cream

It comes in different strengths, identified by an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) number.

30 or 50 SPF are the best.

A sun hat

Sun hats usually have wide brims to cast a shade, such as a Sombrero or French Foreign Legion hat.

Question 08 : Something to keep you hydrated. ↑

Question

Something to avoid this?

Answer

Any of:

WATER, WATER CONTAINER, CANTEEN, BOTTLE

Canteen is an older name for a water bottle.

If you are filling up from a river, check there are no dead animals in the river upstream!

You can also buy sterilisation tablets to put in the bottle to kill bugs, but they taste horrible.

MATCHES, FLINT AND STEEL, LIGHTER

Don't foreget spare gas for your lighter.

A flint causes tiny bits of steel to peel off, that get hot by friction, and are hot and small enough to react with the oxygen in the air causing a small spark.
