Air rifle shooting at Drum Hill Scout Camp, Derbyshire.
Contents
Activity ↑
Activity ↑
We learn to shoot air-rifles at the shooting gallery at Drum Hill Scout Camp.
The session is led by a specialist air rifle expert provided by Drum Hill.
Consent To Shoot Form ↑
It is important that parents and carers provide a consent to shoot form for their cub; without this the cub cannot shoot.
Please download and print the following form off, fill in, and sign, and hand in at the next meeting you can.
Drum Hill Permission To Shoot Form
These are not handed in to Drum Hill, but held by the scout group as evidence of permission, and we must verbally confirm we hold all the permissions with the air rifle experts before we can start.
Group Size ↑
There is a maximum number of cubs that can shoot at the same time (approximately 16), so we normally split into two groups, one group will do something else whilst the other is shooting, and then we swap over.
Timings ↑
Timings are as follows:

|
Risk |
Control |
|
Toilets |
Cubs and adults shown where they are. Adults to use disabled persons’ toilets if available. Cubs to use normal toilets. |
|
Contacting Parents |
Leader in charge will have contact details for all parents. |
|
Where are the leaders? |
Leaders could wear reflective vests so the cubs can find them easily. |
|
Hit by car on arrival / departure |
Cubs will be gathered next to the car park by the county office hut (there is a picnick table to waite around) and wait there supervised by the leaders. Young people arriving first should wait in cars until leaders arrive. |
|
Getting Lost |
Initial chat with the cubs about what we are doing and where we will be. Explain the boundaries – stay on the field – not going into the woods today, or stay in the shooting gallery or going to the toilet. Cubs will be split into two groups and assigned adults in charge. Reminder to stay in sight of their adults. All cubs to have a torch. |
|
Cannot Communicate |
All leaders to have mobile phones. Walkie talkies could be brought along as well. Check all phones / walkie talkies are fully charged. |
|
Losing a cub |
Number of cubs to be counted at start. Head count at regular points. |
|
Getting Cold |
Check every cub has a coat and good shoes. Check every adult has too! NO FLIP FLOPS! |
|
Getting Tired |
Should not be a risk. Bring a chair / blanket in case. |
|
Covid 19 |
Outdoors and limited numbers, so risk is low. Try not to share torches, or chips! No sharing of coats (except in an emergency). |
|
Injury |
Take a first aid kit. Leaders to have first response training. Advise everyone not to run (unless in a wide game area), and to use their torch to keep an eye on where they are walking. |
